I bought a job lot of cheap old junker pocket watch movements, then cheap old watch movements, and practiced on them. Most of them didn't make it!

Agreed. One of my first ever purchases was an out of focus photo, just advertised as 'broken old watch'. Turned out to be a beautiful condition Illinois Ensign with beautiful condition original dial and case. $10. All it needed was a replacement stem and new crystal. Complete fluke but easily enough...

One of my Wilshires today - the one with the refinished dial. Don't like wearing the original dial immaculate case one in case I scratch it whilst fitting boilers!!!

Wowsers. Brilliant. Looks fantastic. Welcome to the addictive world of Illinois. :) As Greg has often said to me, if the case is good, everything else can be sorted.

With worn contacts??? Regarding the PW, it might be worth checking on Illinois forum as I think Fred said montgomery ward was a rebranded Illinois??? Could be imagining it though.
