Re: Writing

OK then... now that's a lot of evidence that I simply hadn't seen. Seems like the most plausible explanation for this one. For 3-digit numbers or Alpina in general, seems like should also check against movement if the weight doesn't make sense.

Re: Writing

How much does your numbers vary in your cases?

Are they all almost the same?

I'm not seeing photos of anything but this first watch and the one I've posted. I'm just looking to see examples so I can ponder further.

It's not a challenge to your theory that I'm attempting here. :)

Re: Writing

I see not particularly useful reason for stamping the weight of the case... in the case... You've got the case already and can weigh it. Information needs to be useful for it to make sense. Caliber number, Style Number both augment and add information that's not repeated. It tells you what should be...

Re: Writing

I'm talking about Caliber 50 ALPINA, not Gruen. As far as timeframes, Alpina did business with Gruen into the 1930s from what I recall as Factory S in one document. The Gruen Caliber 50 was made in Factory M... and yes, they ended those in the 1920s. I'm going strictly on the data I have seen with m...

Re: Writing

I think it's the ALPINA movement caliber. Take a look at this Alpina-Gruen Alpina Gruen.jpg It has an Alpina-Gruen case and stamped with 3 digits above the case serial number. For this watch, they match. Any chance the movement, in the Alpina catalog, is a caliber 50? Or, how about the movement was ...

Re: Caliber 440 movement serial number dating

Here's a final version of the graph of the data. Reasons for not posting a big analysis of the std. deviation, etc, is that it's a non-linear curve, the data has been posted for over a year with regular updates, and there are many more families of movements and case manufacturers left to decode. As ...

Re: Caliber 440 movement serial number dating

DONE! After looking at 121 Caliber 440 movements cased in Wadsworth cases, I'm calling this version of the 440 Serial Number Dating Table complete! I tried to use sources that have a history of selling Gruens that are in excellent condition and thus have a less chance of the movement being swapped ...

Re: ID 1930 Ladies Gruen

You can see how the 835 fits into the overall offering of Gruen movements using the movement map located on the Gruen Movement Catalog page. The 835 is listed in the newly published Caliber Date Table as well with this entry: 835 15 Guild 1924 It's a Guild movement, a designation Gruen gave to their...

To my experience this something is in the range between $50 and $500.
The beautifully sad truth of just how economical it is to collect Gruens. They're still low priced compared to other brands of similar quality.
