Re: Hello Old Friends

Well hello back my friend. I've wondered what happened to you from time to time and even asked others if they had heard from you. It brought a tear to my eye to see your name on a post again. It's good to know you're still looking at the grass from the right side. I knew there was someone out there ...

Re: Email and response

The watch looks like it showed up in http://www.vintagewatchforums.com/viewt ... 33&t=12395. stickly_M85 calls it a pocket watch. Is this your clueless silver and coin expert? Joel

Sorry, Gabe. Things happen way to fast here for me to keep up sometimes. Saw the other post where the seller is apparently a member here. Joel

Re: Is this Lord Elgin Authentic?

First, welcome to the forum. You have already heard from two of the most knowledgeable Elgin collectors here so you have the lowdown on your Star-Glo's movement. Your dial question still remains. I believe your doubts are correct and this dial has been reprinted at some point. I agree that there sho...

Re: fitting crystal to out-of-round bezel

If the bezel is out of round, you should restore it to shape rather than modifying to the crystal to compensate. Use the diameter measurement across the threads at several locations to find the smallest diameter and then pull in wider using finger pressure. Don't squeeze the bezel as misjudgement on...

Re: How many watches would the average guy have owned in the 50's and 60's?

I wasn't that aware of men's watches in that period other than a vague understanding of the military and racing connections. Until less expensive watches like Timex came on the scene, the watch a man wore had the same basic function in daily life then as cell phones do today. Most men wouldn't consi...

Re: Difference between Elgin 421 and Elgin 449

Why do you believe that the first crystal you cite is for a model 421? It clearly states it's for a model 404 which is one of the engraved bezel models with a much larger opening than the enamel bezel models. I've spent a lot of time confused because I missed the big picture while concentrating too ...

Re: Elgin base metal case.

Thanks Betty. My ID came from an ebay listing that had the gold fill and 487 movement but quoted the wrong model number. It's a never ending struggle to dig the right information out of the internet even when Elgin's lack of consistency doesn't misguide us. But until they prefect time travel it's al...
