Re: Ebay vs. Etsy

I stop by ebth.com once in a while and have seen some interesting watches being auctioned. It's essentially estates being liquidated. I haven't tried actually bidding. Anyone have any experience there? Joel

Re: Semi-identifyable watch; has broken balance staff

It looks like there's a serial number on the pillar plate under the edge on the balance. The 49 on the balance cock should match the last 2 numbers if it is original to the movement. The other bridges will be stamped with the last 2-4 numbers also. This was done so they could be matched back up even...

Re: Hamilton Collecting Opinions Sought

Several things about Hamiltons appeal to collectors on a budget. There is enough information available about Hamilton models to keep an inexperienced buyer out of trouble. The last thing I could afford when I started collecting was waste my money on a watch that was rare or valuable when in fact it ...

Re: Elgin Townsman model 4640 21j grade 675.

I tried numerous bands and bracelets on mine ... I knew I was forgetting a Townsman. I read about your search for a strap. This black lizard was the best choice out of my available straps. I think the black suede was original. That might be the one if I can find a NOS on ebay. I have one in burgund...

Elgin Townsman model 4640 21j grade 675.

As a veteran (jaded?) Elgin collector, it takes a lot to get me excited about a design. For most watches, the biggest challenge involves picking a strap that looks good or finding a feature worth writing about in a post. The Townsman is a whole different animal. There’s nothing in Elgin’s crazy hist...

Hamilton Electric Vantage grade 505.

The increase in popularity (and prices) of Elgins has moved some of my focus to Hamiltons and Walthams. As long as I stay away from the asymmetrics and stick to the common models, the 505 powered electrics offer some bargains like this Vantage I won recently. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/tgOJT5...

Re: Elgin Celestial Model 7519 23j grade 718.

A little searching at Tip Top Crystals got me squared away. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mLe2RKtuVk6RcZNJPeERtyUo082T8o5d_LMtHTV3hFGBE30imn81ggP4YUH1KyuvoJ0os8L4UFFEdYmSlt08EHW2GAe024W5tNxPW0ZiSFX84EoJaWeRFGYOyd0x6fGpLNdsCbOJ5UmJY5CKs8UKZaLdsfyGciB3RcD7ku_EocuJx37IS62NEZg4_7t8H7FZKjykVVJ256m9Tc...

Waltham Grade 567 17j Ruby from 1934.

Another glorious Waltham from the 30’s. This one came to me back in May and I just got around to getting it running. I seldom bid on Hess auctions because of their unrealistic prices but this watch came to me for an uncontested $40 bid. Maybe it was the non-running part of the description or the Wal...

Re: Elgin States model 679 Grade 428 15j from 1925.

Thanks for the ID. Today I discovered a couple of things about the Kreisler band. I've been wearing it on my solid gold Waltham which is just a little longer so I can just manage to get it latched around my wrist. Looking at it in sunlight it's actually green gold, distinctly different from the yell...

Re: Elgin States model 679 Grade 428 15j from 1925.

Thanks all. This is why I like to bring a nice piece to the forum once in a while. Good catch Air, I'm used to the catalogs and ads mentioning another model number as a strap/band variation and missed the colors. You also Magpie. I admit to using the movement to date my watches as long as it seems o...
