WWII Elgin Canteen underwater watch

Just curious: Any opinions as to how many of these were a) manufactured, and b) survive today?

serial number database for later Elgins

Can anyone help with an Elgin database for later Elgin wrist watch movements where the serial numbers begin with a letter? I've got an Elgin 680 wristwatch movement with the serial number K923884, and can't find a database with that number. Everything is pocket watches. Maybe this is something we co...

gold lapped defined

Hi: has anyone figured out what Elgin meant in their catalogs when they said a case was "gold lapped." I assume there is some distinction between "lapped" and "gold", and of course I know the difference between gold-filled and rolled-gold plate. For example, from Elgin's '52 catalog, there is a 4521...

Re: Jaeger-LeCoultre versus Hamilton - a reverso tale.

An amazing find, Mark! Your Hamilton exploits would make a great article all by themselves. As a researcher, this is the type of stuff that gets me excited, almost as much as the watches themselves. I can't wait to see the article that will come of this, and more revelations from this cache of compa...

Bitcoin

I am wondering if anyone out there is accepting and/or trading in Bitcoin? Or perhaps contemplating. I noticed that some of the manufacturers are accepting it as well as some of the larger vintage websites. What I'm trying to find out is if some of you smaller or vest pocket watch dealers are accept...

Re: Hurricane Harvey here in Houston

Stan and Shirlee: For those of us in the non-hurricane sections of the U.S. (like me in Wisconsin), this is simply unimaginable. Stan, I know you are not seeking any "atta boys", but bless you for pitching in and helping. It certainly looks like FEMA and state/local agencies are bringing their A gam...

Re: Help with Elgin ID

I finally found a model 1401 illustrated in the 1933 annual catalog. Correct bezel opening and dial, but wrong case. The 1401 case still has those thin enamel filled lines running between the lugs and the crystal. Mine is a plain bezel with no enameling. Rats. Back to the drawing board. So I went th...

Help with Elgin ID

Can someone help ID this 1920s (I assume?) Elgin? I looked in my 1928-29 catalog and couldn't find it, nor in Shugart, nor in Ehrhardt Volume I. It's in pretty decent shape, not counting the crappy replacement crown someone put on it. Thanks!
